STEEL VALLEY BEACON PRESENTS THE FANTASTIC, MATCHGIRLS, MUSICAL BY BILL OWEN AND TONY RUSSELL

The Matchgirls

During the summer of 1888 the poor women workers at the Bryant & May factory did what no working women had ever thought could be done. No longer happy with the horrendous conditions and poor pay, they walked out of work and took to the streets of London to share their plight with the world.

London’s rich and power looked on as 2000 women marched to Westminster. After a month the shareholders at Bryant & May agreed to the women’s terns and conditions and history was made. The following year inspired by the matchgirls, London’s dockworkers and tram drivers also marched for better terms.

“The Matchgirls” is a musical celebration of the achievement of these brave women. We are proud to tell the almost forgotten story of those who were at the vanguard of the Trade Union Movement.
